[120] 빠른 결정은 항상 틀리다? * 빠른 결정 좋다 생명 구할 때 / 운전할 때

People often discuss whether quick decision is needed or not. I strongly believe that a quick decision is needed because it can work in helping endangered people and in driving a car.

Firstly, people who are faced with emergency, especially related with life, should make a quick decision. Once people are suddenly confronted by danger of life, most of them hesitate to cope with the situation quickly and ultimately miss a chance to save someone. In this situation, making a quick decision is strongly needed. For example, suppose that the old suddenly falls under the subway track and is unconscious right before a train comes into the station. Although there are several moments possible to run down and save him, those who think deeply and has fear of coming train couldn't save the old. Only those who make a quick decision instinctively could save life in emergency.

Secondly, a quick decision is needed for people who often drive a car. Driving a car sometimes requires a lot of cautions for keeping a sharp lookout, and if emergency suddenly happen, drivers couldn't avoid making a quick decision. In my case, I go for a work by a car everyday, so I am faced with several emergencies a week. A dog running into the road, a child following his ball, or an animal hanging out at the street are always close at hand, and in this situation, a long and deep concern; having fear of another accident or confirming what the unexpected object is, causes only a serious car accident. I should step on the brake or turn the wheel quickly without any deep concern. This illustrates why a person who often drives needs a quick decision.

All of these things into account, a quick decision help us to save life in emergency and avoid a big car accident.

People, regardless of their job or age, often discuss whether they trust first impr0ssions about a person’s character quickly or not. I myself strongly trust someone’s first impression because it reveals his or her inner personality and daily habit. Let me compare two attitudes and support my preference.

On the one hand, those who place a great emphasis on inner personality and deep decision will not trust first impression. As everyone knows, favorable impression cannot always ensure incessant good behavior, and people can easily find a person who does not have good-looking face but has a beautiful mind. For these reasons, some people consider the inner personality to differ from the outer appearance and watch a new friend in the long run, even if his or her first impression is not good. Moreover, they tend to believe that quick decision is wrong, so never easily estimate someone’s ability or characteristic owing to one or two mistakes. This illustrates why the first impression is unbelievable for some people.

One the other hand, I myself trust the first impression because I can catch someone’s inner world and daily habit through his or her first impression. For example, let’s say that there is a new friend of mine who is always smiling whenever and wherever he is. Although I couldn’t know his deep emotion, I can be convinced that a least he has a positive attitude to everything. Furthermore, if a new workmate of mine has a neat feature everyday, I could guess at least he or she is diligent and self-administers well. In this way, people reveal their inner personality and good habit through their first impression.

All of these things into account, despite of its modest disadvantages, evaluating people by the first impression is a good way of knowing their inner world and guessing their daily habit.

[148] 게임은 인생을 가르친다? * 가르친다 – social skill / 실패를 미리 경험

People, regardless of their job, often discuss whether playing games teaches us about life or not. I strongly believe that playing games gives us a life lesson because it teaches us a social skill and failure.

Firstly, by playing a game, people could be sociable. Although a social skill is an important requirement of a citizen, neither school nor home teaches us that kind of knowledge, so it is only through other activities such as playing games that people could learn a social skill. For example, suppose that a group of students play a board game with their peers and divided into several teams. While they exchange their opinions about strategy and collaborate with other teams, they are likely to learn how express their view and how collaborate with others. This illustrates why playing a game is needed for modern citizens.

Secondly, by playing a game, people could experience failure. Of course, there is no person who likes to fail and actually everyone tries not to be unsuccessful, but it is still fact that failure helps people mature more than before, so failure that people could experience by playing games will make them mature. Suppose that a young student who has never failed so far plays chess with his friend. Of course, it will be hard to accept his defeat at first and he might upset, but he will calm himself down and realize how to control his own emotion when he fail. Were it not for that kind of experience, he would be very embarrassed and even frustrated when he is faced with unexpected failure. In this way, people could experience failure and defeat with games.

All of these things into account, playing games encourage people to be sociable and to be strong. It is still clear for me that playing games benefits someone's life.

[119] 자신이 입은 옷에 따라 다르게 행동한다 찬/ * 찬성 유니폼은 행동을 규정한다 / 비싼 옷은 행동을 바꾼다

People, regardless of their age or sex, often discuss whether people behave differently when they wear different clothes or not. I strongly believe that what people wear influence what they do because uniforms limit their behavior and expensive clothes also change their behavior.

Firstly, by wearing uniforms, people’s behavior is limited. Of course, it does not mean that those who wear the same uniforms behave in the same way, but with uniforms, they will naturally change their ordinary habit and behavior. For example, suppose that there are a group of high school students who wear school uniforms. They are less likely to hang out in a nightclub or a bar and purchase cigarettes or alcohols in a supermarket than they would be while wearing casuals, because their status obviously reveal to others owing to their uniforms. This illustrates how uniforms limit people’s activities.

Secondly, by wearing expensive clothes, people’s behavior sometimes changes. For instance, let’s say that I have expensive clothes that are designed by a famous designer. I may behave carefully not to ruin the clothes and even avoid going to shabby and unclean places, and want to go to splendid restaurants or bar that fit my dress. Moreover, because it is what is outside that counts, in these days, my neat feature will ensure good services, so even I may feel that I deserve such good service and treatment. In this way, expansive clothing make people not only feel different but also change their behavior.

All of these things into account, such clothes as uniforms and expensive dresses sometimes change people’s behavior.

[122] 사람은 가진 것에 만족 못한다 * 못한다 계속 남과 비교하니까 / 재미를 추구하니까

People, especially psychologists, often discuss whether people are never satisfied with what they have or not. I strongly believe that people always want something more or something different because of their instinct: comparing with others and always looking for fun.

Firstly, people are never satisfied because they instinctively compare themselves with others. Of course, everyone might think that most priest may be satisfied with what they have, but they also want more love from god. Although what each person wants to could be different, he or she definitely wants something more because they compare things. For example, even a student who wants to be first in his school will set up a higher goal right after he achieves his goal, and the most famous singer in Korea, Rain, also wants go into larger market such as the U.S or Europe. If there are higher and larger world in front of them, they would definitely want to go there. This illustrate why people are never satisfied with what they have now.

Secondly, people are never satisfied because they always look for fun. Like Huizinga, the famous historian, made a term 'Homo Rudens' that means 'a human for fun', people instinctively look for something interesting. For instance, suppose that there is a comedy show that most people like. Even though it is the funniest comedy show, if it does not effort to develop and revise its contents, people would neglect it, because they easily feel bored with repeating the same events. It is not just supposition but reality common in entertainment industry. In this way, people always want something different owing to fun.

All of these things into account, I strongly believe that people are never satisfied with their present situation because they always compare themselves with others and want something more interesting.

People, especially neighbors, often discuss whether a large factory near their community will be beneficial or not. If someone asks me, I definitely agree with building a large factory because it will stir my local economy and other facilities. Let me compare both advantages and disadvantages and support my opinion.

On the one hand, there are several disadvantages of building a large factory: environmental pollution and noise. From televisions or newspapers people can easily find the fact that large factories pollute surroundings, so my neighbors who place a great emphasis on clear environment will disagree with a large factory that may ruin unpolluted nature of my town. Moreover, my community has many schools that need the calm circumstance, so large amount of noise and dust from the factory will not only bother student's class but also harm their fitness. This illustrates why building a large factory is harmful for my town.

On the other hand, I myself agree with building a large factory in my community owing to local economy and facilities. Of course, keeping clear environment is important, but what is essential now is developing the standard of living of my town. Because my town is located in a suburban area, most people go to a nearby big city to earn money, so local economy is decreasing more and more and community's facilities are under the poor condition. In this situation, if a large factory is built, people will come to my town to get a job from neighboring community, as well as my neighbors couldn't go out any more. Furthermore, other convenient facilities such as restaurants and a large market that is needed for labors of the factory will appear in my town. In this way, a large factory will benefit my town.

All of these things into account, although there are several disadvantages, by building a large factory in my town, my community will be not only rich but also convenient place to live.

[025] 쇼핑센터 설립찬성 * 많은 선택의 기회 / local economy 증가

People sometimes discuss whether a large shopping center may be beneficial for their neighborhood or not. I strongly believe that a large shopping center will be helpful for my community because it would give me diverse choices and stir local economy.

Firstly, by building a huge shopping center in my town, I can choose products among many options. My major is sculpture so always need various special tools such as an automatic saw, a sand-paper machine, or a grinder, but there is no professional tool shop in my small community. If a large shopping center that have a lot of special sections is built in my town, I don't need to go other communities far from my home to buy such tools, rather I could choose my implements among diverse kinds of machines in separately divided sections. This illustrates why a large shopping center is needed for me.

Secondly, by building a huge shopping center in my town, it would stir local economy. My community is located in suburban area and most my neighborhood goes to a nearby city in order to buy some groceries and daily necessaries, so local economical activities are decreasing more and more. In this situation, if a large shopping center is built in my town, it will attract not only my neighborhood but also people in neighboring community, and they would spend their money in my town to buy products and use other facilities, so eventually financial activities of my town will be increased. In this way, my community is likely to be a wealth town thanks to a large shopping center.

All of these things into account, building a huge shopping center in my town could gives me a lot of alternatives and encourages growing economy of my town.

[030] 고등학교 설립찬성 * 비행 막을 수 있다 / 많은 편의시설

People sometimes discuss whether a new high school will be beneficial for their community or not. I strongly believe that building a new high school would be beneficial for my community because it could prevent juvenile crime and encourage other facilities.

Firstly, by building a new high school in my town, many teenagers in my town would stay away from juvenile crime. Because of lack of high school, there are a lot of teenagers in my town, most of who should go to school far from their home. They are more likely to hang out in the street of other towns and do misbehavior than they would be while going a nearby school, because they could easily avoid their parents' of teachers' attention. If a new high school is built in my community, they will not engage juvenile crime with full attention of their parents, teachers, and neighbors. This illustrates why a new high school is needed for my neighborhood.

Secondly, by building a new high school in my town, other facilities would be built in my town. Because my community is located in suburban area, there are seldom such facilities as a stationary shop or sports facilities, so my neighbors should go to a nearby city in order to buy school things or play sports. In this situation, building a new high school will encourage other facilities that are necessary for school life: a bus line, a stationary shop, and gym, and those facilities would be helpful not only students but also all community members. In this way, a new high school will make my town be a good place to live.

All of these things into account, my neighbors should give approvals to building a new high school that will stir decrease of teenager misbehavior and construction of diverse facilities.

[007] 영화나 텔레비전이 사람들의 행동에 어떻게 영향? * 폭력을 미화한다 / 유행을 만든다.

People, especially sociologists, often discuss how movies and television influence people’s behavior. I strongly believe that movies and television influence people’s behavior by beatifying violence and setting a new fashion.

Firstly, by beautifying violence, movies and television programs influence people’s behavior, not only teenagers but also adults. Some psychologists indicate that the increasing rate of crime results from the negative influence of visual media such as movies and television. From American action movie such as ‘Die Hard’ to Chinese military art movie such as “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”, there are a lot of movies that depict violent scenery beautifully and impressively. Most of them beautify violence in order to stimulate people and obtain more concern, so those who frequently watch them consider the violence to be exciting and splendid, not dangerous and harmful, even behave violence without any sense of guilty. This illustrates how television and movies effect of people’s behavior.

Secondly, by setting a new fashion, movies and television programs influence people’s behavior. As everyone knows, people tend to behave what others do instinctively and it is known for ‘group mind’. Because most movies and television programs contain real life stories or current issues, those who watch them are likely to be influenced and follow them, so movies and television make a new fashion naturally. For instance, entertainment programs that introduce many celebrated stars could make current clothing style, while comedy programs could make a word of everybody’s lips. In this way, almost all popular behaviors result from movies and television programs.

All of these things into account, watching movies and television programs influence people’s behavior by beatifying violence and setting a new fashion.

[145] 광고 유익? 무익? * 무익 부작용을 말 안 해준다 / 과장, 허위 충동구매 시킨다

People, especially sociologists, often discuss whether advertising introduces about new products that may improve our lives or not. I myself strongly believe that advertising encourage us to buy things we do not really need because they do not mention about side effects and sometimes we are deceived.

Firstly, advertising does not tell us about side effect of its product. Of course, advertising gives us a chance to know a new product that we need, but it informs us only the positive aspect of the product, not negative aspect. Surely, from the point of view of the company that yields the product, it is natural, but from the consumer’s standpoint, it is very dangerous. For example, I bought some cosmetics whose advertising said they help people to keep their skin healthy, but after using that cosmetics, my facial skin showed the allergic reaction because they are made of special enzyme that do not fit disposition of my skin, so I had to get a medical treatment. In this way, advertising does not warn us about side effect of its product.

Secondly, with the exaggeration and untruth of advertising, it is nearly impossible for us not to be deceived. The main purpose of advertising is not informing truth but selling its products; so all elements of advertising such as celebrated athletes and movie stars or stimulating scene are completely devoted to encourage consumers to buy it. For instance, suppose that a woman who likes Britney Spears, a famous singer, buys jean pants that are introduced by Britney Spears in advertising. After a while, she is likely to regret that impulsive buying and realize the product is never related with Britney Spears’s attractive appearance. This illustrates how advertising makes people buy its product impulsively.

All of these things into account, advertisement makes people buy its product without precise information and deep concern.

[008] 텔레비전이 의사소통을 파괴한다 찬/ * 함께 모일 장소를 제공 / 이야기할 주제를 제공

People, especially sociologists, often discuss whether television has destroyed communication among friends and family or not. I strongly believe that television does not destroy communication because it offers people a place to come together and topics to exchange opinions each other.

Firstly, television gives people a place to gather together. In these days, every family member and friend is very busy owing their job and study, so there is no chance to gather in the same place and often see each other, so it is only through television that all family members get together. For example, in my case, my parents are always busy working for their company and my sister and I sometimes come home from schools at night, so we can’t meet all together, but finally come together in front of television at midnight and talk about our daily lives and worries about relationship while watching news. Like my family, most families might consider television to be a place to meet other family members. This illustrates why television is not harmful for communication.

Secondly, television gives people a topic to exchange their opinions. After the end of Korean War in 1953, Korea has changed rapidly more than any country, so there is serious generation gap between parents and their children. For example, suppose that there are a teenager who does not want to talk with her mother who can’t comprehend her behavior and way of thinking, and she watches a drama about love and friendship with her mother in every weekend. While enjoying the story together and discussing what a hero should do next, she is likely to comprehend her mother’s value that differs from that of her, and understand her mother’s feeling more than before. In this way, people could communicate by discussing a topic offered by television.

All of these things into account, television gives people several benefits, rather than damage, in that it makes a place to come together and gives a topic to discuss their different perspectives.

[159] 20세기 가장 주목할 변화 엔터테인먼트 사업 * 엔터테인먼트사업 유행을 만들었다 / 여가시간을 바꿨다

People, especially sociologists, often discuss what the most noticeable change of the twentieth century is. In my opinion, it is the sudden flourish of entertainment of industry because it sets up new fashions and changes our leisure time completely.

Firstly, the entertainment industry set up a lot of new fashions in the 20th. Before the 20th, there is not special fashion, but partial and local fashions, but after the entertainment industry has flourished since the 20th, so-called 'public culture' has appeared. Because people instinctively tended to follow what others do, they wanted to behave in the same way of what stars did. From a new clothing style to a word on everybody's lips, there were enormous new fashions that came from famous television programs or a popular comedy show. Just several entertainment companies made all of them. This illustrates why the entertainment industry was noticeable in the twentieth century.

Secondly, entertainment industry totally changed people's leisure time in the 20th. Before the twentieth century, family members got together in living room or neighbors had a small party when they had an extra time to rest, but in the twentieth century, people suddenly began to spend their free time in other ways. When they had free time, they definitely chose to watch movies or television programs or go to the concert; even some people saw their favorite television show using their own mobile phone in the subway station. In this way, in the 20th, people didn't hesitate to spend their money to the entertainment industry.

All of these things into account, flourishing entertainment industry is the most remembered event of the twentieth century in that it set up a lot of new fashions and changed the life style of publics.
